Saliva Test Basics
Saliva or oral fluid based drug tests are becoming more prevalent because of their convenience and the fact that they can not be adulterated.
The general procedure is to keep the subject from drinking or inserting anything in the mouth for a period of time about 15 minutes. A collection of saliva is then obtained and either mixed with chemicals or placed onto a color-test strip in order to determine the presence of alcohol or other drugs.
The time period during which alcohol and drugs can be detected by this method is relatively low, 3 hours to 4 days max.
Saliva / oral fluid-based drug tests can detect more recent use than other testing methods
Detection times in saliva test:
|Marijuana and hashish (THC):||up to 24 hours|
|Opiates (Codeine/Morphine):||2-3 days|
|Methamphetamine and ecstasy:||2-3 days|
Saliva test is less efficient than other testing methods in detecting marijuana use.
Testing is usually performed by employers, for either pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, or return-to-duty testing.

Saliva drug test are very donor friendly, non-invasive and easy to collect the specimen. There is no need for a bathroom to administer the tests.
So, these drug tests are harder to adulterate than the urine drug tests since the sample can be obtained under direct supervision.
Because of little detection times, this kind of test is usually quick and unexpected (random, post-accident) and you have just a few hours (or even minutes) to prepare for it.
